The University of Tennessee – Martin traces its roots back to 1900 when it was established as a private institution
named Hall-Moody Institute. In 1927, the university became a part of the University of Tennessee system and was
renamed as the University of Tennessee Junior College. In 1951, the institution extended its four-year, degree-granting
programs and became known as the University of Tennessee – Martin Branch. Finally, in 1967, the university achieved
its independence and became the University of Tennessee – Martin.
