History
The University of Benin was founded in 1970 as an Institute of Technology and upgraded to a full-fledged university in 1971. It started as an affiliate of the University of Ibadan and later became part of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).
In 1975, it was taken over by the Federal Government of Nigeria and renamed the University of Benin. Since its establishment, the university has grown tremendously and has contributed significantly to the development of Nigeria.
